Leadership: An Inevitable Coaching Role

A central tenet of coaching is that clients contain within themselves the most satisfying solutions to what they want in life. The role of the coach is to listen, mirror, and be physically and emotionally present in support of their work, which is to, through their own agency, grow in awareness, overcome obstacles, and set and achieve meaningful goals. Leading the client is taboo. It thwarts this process, creates dependency, and therefore is to be avoided.

However, I have come to believe that coaches cannot avoid leading and that in fact, we lead the client all the time, and this does not subvert the work we do. On the contrary, recognizing and owning leadership as part of our role will make us better coaches.

In this session we will explore:
•    Our leadership role in coaching
•    The impact of our leadership decisions on the client, the client/coach relationship and our own coaching presence
•    Why we might want to concern ourselves with this question

The conversation will center on a coaching demonstration where participants observe and note how they would have made different interventions. We will explore their interventions either through discussion or further demonstrations in which participants will be invited to coach if they wish.
